Come acquaint yourself with the remarkable story and wines of the Boscarelli family which has bottled 60 peerless vintages of a beloved Tuscan red style and isn’t slowing down on its splendid vinous journey.
Tuscany is, in theory, Italy’s most prolific and popular wine region, blessed with a lion’s share of Italy’s finest reds including Chianti, Brunello Di Montalcino and Super Tuscans. But for many, Tuscany is just an infinite gold mine of red wine styles, some revered and some underrated. One classic instance of underrated Tuscan gold is Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano. Notably the first Italian wine style to be awarded DOCG status, this red wine is vinified from Sangiovese grapes handpicked in vineyards near the Tuscan town of Montepulciano which neighbours the prestigious Montalcino DOCG. And one of its finest makers is the family estate of Boscarelli. For over 60 years, Boscarelli has stayed true to the family ethos of making wines of balance and authentic expression. Boscarelli’s vinous journey began in 1962 when founder Egidio Corradi set himself the goal of making a wine that best reflected his region’s aromas and flavours. by his daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari. Corradi acquired vineyards in two of Montepulciano’s most promising regions, coaxing greatness out of the soil to produce wines of true brilliance.
Boscarelli’s vineyards enjoy ideal diurnal temperature (day night contrast) and cooling winds coupled with well-draining clay soils soils, all of which impart minerality and vital flavours and character to the fruit. While Sangiovese accounts for 80 per cent of all vines planted, Boscarelli has interestingly chosen to plant lesser known local grapes of Canaiolo, Mammolo and Colorino. Some parcels are also planted with French noble grapes Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Vino Nobile DOCG remains Boscarelli’s overwhelming priority, accounting for 80 per cent of total production. The DOCG blend is Sangiovese led and by law has to be aged under oak for at least two years. Their top wine is Vino Nobile Riserva is produced from grapes grown on the estate’s oldest vineyards and only 10,000 bottles are annually produced. Today, Egidio’s grandsons Luca and Nicolò continue his legacy of making some of the regions finest Vino Nobile Di Montepulciano from low yield and expressive Sangiovese fruit as well as exuberant modern style wines from noble French grapes.
