Carricante

Tornatore,-Etna-Bianco-2023
Tornatore, Etna Bianco 2023
Sicily’s vines nestle and flourish under the Mediterranean sun off the mainland in Italy’s deep south. And while the island grows its fair share of marquee grapes, the edgy Mount Etna DOC contains a scarcely mentioned white wine by the name of Carricante which is perhaps amongst Italy’s bravest. One of Sicily modern and bold wineries Tornatore headed up by Francesco Tornatore, has nurtured a vibrant Carricante style that drinks of copious melon, apple and citrus zest balanced by pure elegance and minerality.

Loureiro

Quinta do Ameal, Loureiro White 2023
Quinta do Ameal, Loureiro White 2023
Portugal is synonymous with the gold standard of fortified wines but there are so many underrated vinous pearls that await discovery and we’ve recently shipped in a bright white from the country’s sunny northern reaches of Vinho Verde. This refreshing modern style white is produced from the little known Loureiro grape which the family estate of Quinta do Ameal specialises in growing and vinifying. Granite soils and oceanic winds coax brilliant expression out of the Louriero grape as does winemaker Pedro Araújo. The grape in fact lends exuberance to the famous Vinho Verde white blend and by itself shows aromatic floral notes and refreshing citrus and lime flavours laced with minerality and zip of acidity, good enough to earn 90 points from Wine Spectator.

Blaufränkisch

Heinrich, Blaufränkisch 2018
Now this red wine migh have the reputation of being quiet the tongue twister but one that more than merits the effort of getting the phonetics right. This native Austrian red grape is almost exclusively grown only in Austria has the capacity to turn out wines of deep flavour. And that’s what the family estate of Heinrich has done successfully in the Austrian region of Burgenland. This sumptuous red wine is organically vinified from from handpicked grapes along Lake Neusiedl at the foot of the limestone rich Leithaberg mountain, barrel aged for 18 months and bears a palate of blueberry, cherry, cloves, and pepper, capped by silky, lingering tannins.

Chateauneuf du Pape

Saint-Cosme-Chateau-21
Saint Cosme, Chateauneuf-Du-Pape 2021
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is far and away the most popular appellation in Southern Rhone and also its most hedonistic blend with as many as 18 grapes permitted. This grand historic wine is close to head winemaker Louis Barruol’s heart and the Chateauneuf-du-Pape doesn’t sit too far from Saint Cosme’s winery in Gigondas. This estate has earned great acclaim for this hedonistic blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Cinsault, picked from three micro-climates, the most famous of which is the plateau of La Crau, rich in clay soils that imbues the wine with structure while Valori and Christia’s sandy soils, lend the wine, freshness and intense aromas. Aged for 24 months in old 228-liter barrels, this organically produced red blend is holy royalty indeed and pure velvet on the palate

Gruner Veltliner

Loimer, Gruner Veltliner Kamptal 2024
Austria holds the distinction for turning out innumerable light and fresh styles from its shining local star white grape Gruner Vetliner. The Austrian grape takes its time to ripen and thrives in a cool climate. The classic style beams with a perfumed, floral nose and coats the palate with bright tones of citrus, green apple and lime buoyed by generous acidity. This description is high praise for owner winemaker Fred Loimer whose organic approach to viticulture and diligent winemaking brings it altogether in cool Kamptal, Austria’s go to region for high quality Gruner Vetliner.
