Languedoc is a verdant and cavernous region that thrives and shines almost as brightly as the neighbouring Rhone Valley but goes above and beyond when it comes to its incredible diversity of varietals and styles. This southerly region is regarded as a liberal island for winemakers in a country tightly legislated by an AOC regime to which the likes of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne obediently answer. Amongst this vast trove of liberally produced ferments, one creative force has held its own, bringing traditional craft and micro-climate understanding to its wines, further enriching Languedoc’s currency as a vinous French bastion. Famille Fabre is based in Boutenac, a sub-region and cru (a classification of the highest quality) within the larger Corbières appellation of the Languedoc-Roussillon wine region in southern France which basks under a sun set in Mediterranean mood and soils rich in clay and limestone that make for fruits ripened to promising expression.
This region has its set of indigenous grapes like Carignan and has also marked success with the likes of Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and yes, Pinot Noir. Boutenac gained its own independent appellation (AOC) within Corbières in 2005, recognising the area’s distinctive terroirs and quality wines from particularly those based on Carignan, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. The vineyards are situated on well-drained, low-nutrient soils, often with a mix of limestone and clay, contributing to the unique mineral character of the wines, helped by the Atlantic winds that blow down the Aude Valley. Boutenac’s Mediterranean climate and hardy soils have endowed the region with tremendous potential for wines of capital quality which of its more prominent winemakers have delivered.,

The Famille Fabre Story
Famille Fabre is one of the oldest independent wine producers in the Languedoc in the south of France and has been owned and managed by the Fabre family since 1605. family’s 14th generation, Louis Fabre who crafts a sterling range of organic wines from local and noble varieties. Wine Park has just launched the Famille Fabre L’Instant and Grande Courtade range in India featuring a fruit forward Syrah blend, a mineral driven Sauvignon Blanc , the Pet Nat, a unique and age old French sparkling style and southern French turn of Pinot Noir. Today, Louis Fabre is the owner, representing the family’s 14th generation along with his wife Clement, her husband Louis and Jeanne Fabre (daughter and wine tourism) as well as longtime winemaker Bernard Rehs. In deference to tradition, and with subsequent generations in mind, the Fabre family converted their entire estate to organic viticulture. Their wines are elegant expressions of the Languedoc while still reflecting their rugged and rebellious region. Famille Fabre has been certified organic since 1991 and today they produce 100 per cent organic wine at the estate with some biodynamic practices as well.
Over the course of many generations, the Famille Fabre company has come to own 150 hectares of vineyards in the Languedoc region of France. The family owns five châteaux in five different appellations of Pays d’Oc, AOC Languedoc, Corbières, and Minervois. The family estate produces over 700,000 bottles annually and focuses on a number of grapes including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Roussanne, Malbec, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. The estate’s vineyard’s abound with soils of clay, limestone, marl and gravel. This very traditional and historic estate today walks the modern path with organic and eco-sensitive practices. The family’s most recent initiative of making most of their wines sulphite-free is a positive gauntlet for other wineries in the region to pick up and embrace.
