Portugal was always known for its sweet fortified wine, port. Portugal rose to fame for it’s less potent, table wines much later. Portugal’s prolonged isolation from the wine world helped them to preserve their rich heritage of ingenious grape varieties which now in turn gives their wines its distinct characters and flavours. From the early 1900s Portugal has been recognized for its table wines, especially for her reds with the help of modern winemaking techniques.
