Bold New Argentine

Discover some bold and cool Malbec wines from the Argentine estate of Matias Riccitelli that reflect its winemaker’s refreshingly modern style and Mendoza region’s finest form
The New World is a capacious and exciting canvas upon which creative winemakers unshackled by regional rules have turned out palate stunning ferments. And nowhere is the continual phenomenon more in peak than Argentina which is where the newest wine estate to join the Wine Park family works its magic. Say hello to Matias Riccitelli, a young and thrillingly bold winemaker who is reinventing Argentina’s Malbec style and impressing the world with a refreshing approach to winemaking itself. Matias Riccitelli was born to famed Argentine winemaker Jorge Riccitelli and at a young age, opted to arm himself with valuable international experience working in vineyards across the world. He returned home to front winemaking at two prestigious estates before believing it was time to makes wines the way he truly wanted to so in 2019 he dove headlong into launching his own label.

Matias chose Mendoza’s Luja de Cuyo region where he owns 20 hectates of ungrafted old vineyards in three distinct microclimates at the foothills of the Andes mountains. He also built a gravity flow winery at the highest point above sea level. Luján de Cuyo is one of Mendoza’s most promising sub-region where a splendid combination of high altitude, desert-like noon heat and cooling night winds extend the ripening season while the infertile rocky alluvial soils stress the wines into producing smaller berries of superb quality. It was in fact in Luján de Cuyo  that the architect of Argentina’s illustrious wine industry, Malbec was first planted in 1853 and today Matias Riccitelli has re-fashioned and crafted a bold modern style. He has all the grapes handpicked and the juice fermented in small vats to unlock concentrated flavours.

Matias is invested in the potential of old vines to retain authentic fruit character which Matias then enhances with modern tech in the winery. Not one to rest on his laurels, Matias launched yet another wine project in 2015 with old vine parcels in Patagonia’s Rio Negro region. The pure and delicate flavours of Matias’s wines shine through on the palate. Matias Riccitelli wines reflect his love for the vast Mendoza region and winemaking ethos that marries tradition and modern creativity. And we’ve plucked three of Matias Riccitelli’s coolest Malbec expressions, bursting with perfectly ripened fruit and rich character, for you to appreciate. This December, enjoy Matias Riccitelli’s cracking good signatures. Cheers!
