Sultry summers are the best excuse to raid the rosé rations and the best selections almost invariably feature this top South African blush style. Boekenhoutskloof winemaker Marc Kent doesn’t do ordinary and his rose expression is no exception to the rule, pushing the boundaries on the presumptions of a rose’s colour and taste. This rose is produced using the French ‘Saignee’ method which entails a few hours of skin contact before the juice is bled off, having taken on colour, flavour and character. All of these elements show through beautifully on this rose, showing a relatively deeper copper hue, perfume and fresh cherries from Cinsault and red berry tones by way of Grenache and Syrah’s peppery notes.
The right of passage to endure hot childhood summers entailed slurping through sumptuous, almost diabetically sweet and tall glasses of Rooh Afza, the standard brand of rose sherbet and we’re arbitrarily graduating you to the proper stuff with this authentic, naturally sweet South African ferment. The instantly lovable natural sweet wine style is the legacy of the vinous art South Africa has honed over decades and sports a hue that we Indians associate with the pink cooler we grew up on. The wine itself shimmers with natural sweetness, complimented by floral and berry flavours.
