Château Sociando-Mallet is in the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, north of Pauillac, in the Haut-Médoc appellation. While looking for a Belgian customer, Bordeaux merchant Jean Gautreau fell in love with the property. Despite the piteous state of the equipment and the property of only 5 hectares (12 acres), the ideal situation on the banks of the Gironde and the panoramic view of the estuary.
The first vintages revealed the exceptional terroir of Chateau Sociando-Mallet : Gunz gravel-perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon that gives the wines a beautiful freshness. Since the acquisition Gautreau has progressively expanded the estate by buying vineyard parcels from his neighbors. In a constant quest to hone the quality of the wines, he has renovated all of the buildings on the property, built a new winery, and gradually improved the varietal mix of the vineyards. Today, it has reached 85 hectares (210 acres), and the Haut-Médoc makes it a favorite of Bordeaux aficionados.
