The Pure & Powerful Vietti Barolo, 2021
Barolo is the shining gold standard that defines Piedmont and keeps its star twinkling in the firmament of the world’s greatest red wines. And Barolo does precisely the same thing for the storied estate of Vietti that has mastered and defined the modern style of Barolo. The estate nestles in the village of Castiglione Falletto in Piedmont’s Langhe region, chiefly producing the world famous Barolo and Barbaresco. Present winemaker Eugenio Palumbo takes a meticulous, natural approach to the fruit, following the immaculate act of living legend Luca Currado-Penna widely known as the king of single-cru Barolo, son of Alfredo Currado who is hailed as one of the first makers of a single vineyard Barolo over six decades ago.
Their hallmark Barolo DOCG takes in grapes from 20 prime vineyard parcels including crus like and Ravera. Ginestra, Mosconi and Bricco, all rich in caclerous and clay soils that impart the evolving fruit with depth and dimension. The classic Barolo is barrel aged for thirty months in large barriques as well as some portion in small barrels and rated 93 points by Wine Advocate and James Suckling is a vinous ambassador not just for Vietti but the entire bold red region of Piedmont. Vietti Barolo enamours the palate with floral hints, generous red cherry, tobacco, and spices, lorded over by a balance of power and elegance, crowned by acidic freshness and delicious tannic finish. Set this gourmet Piedmontese jewel beside a rich creamy truffle risotto, rosemary lamb shanks, aged goronzoloa and sharpish parmesan cheese. Now that’s a proper meal befitting vinous royalty. Cheers!
